Viki Brown has coordinated these Caribbean workshops so that a group of people can come together and learn special skills for their growth. Many people have returned yearly to St. John in the last 20 years. Everyone meets new friends or greets friends that have become family members. Sharing experiences, working together to formulate new ideas, dancing, swimming and a lot of laughter evolve from these meetings of our life. You have a personal invitation to develop avenues of yourself that deserve such pleasures.

Workshop: Nuts and Bolts of Producing and Distributing a Documentary
Instructors: Laurel Chiten and Andrea Leland

See their short documentary and go to their website for more information

Independent documentary filmmakers have a story to tell and a great passion for their subjects. In this age of corporate mass media, it is the individual voice of the filmmaker that stands out and is often applauded. How is one to make an artful, well crafted film and launch it so that it reaches it’s target audience? This workshop will explore the process of finding one’s own voice in filmmaking and the steps one has to take to see a film from idea to completion and presentation.
Workshop includes:

Dynamics of fundraising: networking, pitching your project, writing a successful proposal, finding a fiscal sponsor, identifying in-kind partners, creating a trailer, developing a realistic budget.
Structuring a documentary: elements of an engaging, informative documentary. Why are some films successful and other rarely seen? Is sound design necessary?
Working with crew members or going solo: discussion of advantages and disadvantages of working with camera, sound and editors in the production and post production phase.
Elements of successful interviewing: identifying a good subject to be filmed, creating a list of questions that gets the most from your subject, preparing the interviewee, and structuring the interview to add visual drama.
Developing a “buzz” about your film: elements of a good press packet, developing a brand and logo for your film, collecting still photos, writing newsletters during production and post production, developing the audience for your film, collecting reviews of the completed film, YouTube and more.
Marketing and launching the film: elements of distribution, film festival strategy, finding the right distributor for television, digital and educational markets.

This class will be helpful to students who already have a project in mind, have work in progress or have a completed documentary they are ready to promote and distribute. The class will be structured as a seminar with each student's project becoming a hands on "case study". Students can expect intensive feedback on their own projects.
